On changing seasons

This is my favorite time of year. That’s for a number of reasons. One is, fall comes after summer and, while I love the sunshine and warm weather, I get tired of the heat pretty quickly.

Frankly, I just love the changing of the seasons. Variety is awesome. But back to the heat thing. I don’t like it mainly because it makes me feel uncomfortable. Cold weather also can, but I can bundle up and be fine.

It’s the heat I don’t like. Some like it hot, but not me.

I think it’s simply because I don’t like discomfort. And there are several things that make me feel the heat of discomfort. Embarrassment, humiliation, change, regret—these all make me uncomfortable.

It’s partly why I’ve continued down paths that aren’t beneficial without giving serious thought to why. Why would I continue doing something that’s not helpful?

Notice I’m asking myself the question, not you. That’s because more than once I’ve found myself at the place of wondering how I got there. When did I decide to take on something that would ultimately undermine my well-being, my job, and my relationships?

And more to the point of that question, why don’t I stop? If you’re like me you have also been there and may be there right now. Why not just stop doing that thing that’s actually causing you pain?

If that thing is alcohol, then you may have all kinds of reasons why you continue drinking. You like it. It tastes good. It helps you unwind and relax. It makes you better. Come on, everyone drinks, right?

But at the end of the day, or more accurately—at the start of the next day—you don’t like what it’s doing to you.

You don’t want to continue and you know you must make a move on it, and soon. Before it’s too late.

At this point what you need is encouragement. No beat-downs. No lectures. Nobody expects to be at the point their (seemingly harmless) evening activity is about to ruin their career or marriage.

Until it is.

Your life is too important to squander. Your opportunity is too great to blow. Your life was on it’s way to being amazing—no, actually is too amazing—to screw up.

So let’s change it. Let’s take control of this thing right now. You’re not the first to be here in this spot and you won’t be the last. No need to tell people you have a problem, no need to declare yourself an alcoholic.

With the right help you can step back and take a pause. And without having to summon the willpower to stop. No need to make a PSA. With the right methodology and information you can change your trajectory. No need to join a group of weekly meetups where you have to admit you have an incurable disease.

I have no doubt what I share with you will change your life, but you have to make the move. You will arrive at the place where alcohol has become small and insignificant in your life. You will again be excited about where you’re headed and how you feel, and for good reason. You’ll be in control.

No need to keep putting it off. Time to get pumped about life again. Let’s get started.

Here’s to changing seasons!

Tim
